FULL ROUTE OF THE MOSQUE AND ALCÁZAR OF CÓRDOBA

  1. 1

The guided tour combines the Mosque-Cathedral of Cordoba and the Alcazar of the Christian Monarchs in a single experience, lasting approximately 2 hours and 30 minutes and going inside both monuments. The route is arranged around the available entry slots and, while it usually starts at the Mosque-Cathedral and continues at the Alcazar, the order may be reversed depending on access availability — the full visit is always covered either way.

  2. 2

At the Mosque-Cathedral, the guide sets the historical scene from the arrival of the Umayyads in 711, through the emirate and the caliphate up to Abd al-Rahman III in 929, and how that shift in power connects with projects such as Medina Azahara. From there the building is explained by construction phases, starting with the original mosque of Abd al-Rahman I and its architecture, with references to the reuse of columns and capitals, the system of arches and the orientation of the qibla wall, as well as the remains linked to the basilica of Saint Vincent Martyr. The route continues with the extension by Abd al-Rahman II, which introduces the maqsura and the growth of the city, and moves on to the extension by Al-Hakam II, the most striking stretch for its artistic development, the skylight and the mihrab, where inscriptions and decorative details are explained, including the tesserae sent by the emperor Nikephoros Phokas. The visit then links to the Christian period after 1236 and to the building of the cathedral transept between 1523 and 1603, pointing out pieces such as the choir stalls and the main altarpiece, and also connecting with elements such as the Monstrance of Enrique de Arfe and Manuel Ocaña's study of stonemasons' marks, which help to interpret how the different periods coexist within the same building.

  3. 3

After the Mosque, the tour continues at the Alcazar of the Christian Monarchs, understood as a seat of power since Roman times and used continuously through different periods. Here the guide sets out Roman Cordoba as Colonia Patricia Corduba and highlights pieces such as the 3rd-century Roman sarcophagus in Carrara marble, before walking through the main spaces: the Tower of the Lions, the Hall of the Mosaics, the Moorish Courtyard and the Mudejar Royal Baths linked to Alfonso XI. The tour ends in the Alcazar gardens, with their terraced layout and pools, rounded off with the historical background of their role under the Catholic Monarchs and their later use by the Spanish Inquisition, which explains how the complex changed over time.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS ABOUT THE GUIDED TOUR OF THE MOSQUE AND ALCÁZAR

Are the tickets to the Mosque-Cathedral and the Alcázar included in the price?

Yes, tickets to both monuments are included in the price of the tour. We arrange the tickets in advance so you do not have to queue at the ticket office or worry about sold-out slots.

Can I stay longer inside the Mosque or the Alcázar after the guided tour?

Not at the Mosque-Cathedral. Under the Cathedral Chapter's rules, groups must enter and leave accompanied by their guide. At the Alcázar you can stay in the gardens as long as you like once the guided tour ends.

Can I go with a pushchair or a wheelchair?

Pushchairs are allowed in the Mosque, although we recommend a baby carrier because there are narrow areas between the columns. At the Alcázar you must leave the pushchair at the entrance because of the stairs along the route. Wheelchairs: the Mosque is accessible along more than 95% of the route. The Alcázar has stairs in the towers, halls and interior areas, so you will only be able to see the gardens and part of the courtyard.

Do I need to wear any specific clothing?

Yes, at the Mosque-Cathedral modest dress is required, as it is a working religious building. Shoulders covered (no straps), skirts and trousers below the knee, and caps or hats are not allowed inside. The Cathedral Chapter may refuse entry if it considers clothing disrespectful.

Are pets allowed on the tour?

No, the rules of both monuments do not allow entry with pets. Certified guide dogs do have access, provided this is communicated when booking.

How can I get the free tickets for the Fernandine Churches?

The tickets for the Fernandine Churches (San Lorenzo, San Pedro, Santa Marina, Santiago, San Miguel, San Pablo and La Magdalena) are a gift from the Mosque-Cathedral with your admission ticket. You must request them from the guide before the end of the visit to the Mosque, as the guide will ask for them at the ticket office for the participants who want them.

Should I include children under 3 who do not pay in the booking?

Yes, it is very important to include all participants, even babies under 3 who go free. We need to know the total number of people for capacity control, as the group can have a maximum of 30 people under the monuments' rules.

How early do I need to be at the meeting point?

We recommend being at the meeting point at least 10 minutes before your booked time. That way, if you cannot find the guide with the orange umbrella, we can help you locate them before the tour starts. Guides wait a maximum of 5 minutes' courtesy after the start time.
