This Cordoba free tour is an introductory, panoramic walk through the historic centre, designed to help you understand the city before entering any monument. The visit begins in Plaza de las Tendillas, where the guide organises the group and sets out Cordoba's origins, from its pre-Roman period to its consolidation as the Roman city of Corduba, explaining how that same spot remains the city's centre over two thousand years later.
From there you head into the historic centre to interpret Andalusi town planning, the narrow alleys and irregular layout that characterise the Jewish Quarter. Along the way you'll learn about the Umayyad arrival in 711, the creation of the independent emirate under Abd al-Rahman I in 756, and the proclamation of the caliphate by Abd al-Rahman III in 929, understanding why Cordoba became one of the great political and cultural centres of Western Europe.
Along the walk the guide links together spots such as the Puerta de Almodóvar, the area around Maimonides, and zones linked to the craft tradition and the patios of Cordoba, giving you practical pointers for what to explore further on your own afterwards. You won't go inside any monuments, but you'll get all the context you need to understand them.
The route ends outside the Mosque-Cathedral, in the area of the Triunfo de San Rafael, where you'll get a general introduction to the city's most iconic monument and its historical importance, before deciding whether you'd like to complete the experience with a guided tour of the interior.
