The Mosque-Cathedral of Cordoba is one of the largest and most complex monuments in Spain. It holds over 1,200 years of history within a single building: an 8th-century Umayyad mosque extended over three centuries, with a Renaissance cathedral built inside it by order of Charles V. Without a guide to help you from the start, it's easy to walk through it without understanding what you're actually looking at.

The route starts in the Patio de los Naranjos, the mosque's former ablutions courtyard, and enters the interior through the original nave built by Abd al-Rahman I in the year 786 over the Basilica of San Vicente, a Visigothic church whose archaeological remains can be seen below the current floor level — one of the details a self-guided visit won't explain.
The interior is toured west to east, following the caliphate's extensions. The nave of Abd al-Rahman I, with its two-tone stone-and-brick arches, gives way to the extensions of Abd al-Rahman II and Abd al-Rahman III, and then to the area built by al-Hakam II, home to the Mihrab. The Byzantine mosaics in that section were commissioned by al-Hakam II directly from the Byzantine emperor in the 10th century. The ribbed dome over the Mihrab's vestibule, the Maqsura, is one of the most complete examples of Andalusi art in Spain.
From there you access the Cathedral Treasury, home to the 16th-century Corpus Christi monstrance, before moving on to the cathedral transept, the Gothic and Renaissance cathedral that Charles V authorised to be built at the centre of the mosque in 1523. The Baroque altarpiece of the main chapel and the mahogany choir stalls close out the tour of the monument's Christian side.
The Mosque-Cathedral of Cordoba was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1984 and is the only building in the world where an Umayyad Caliphate mosque and a Christian cathedral share the same space, with neither having destroyed the other.
