A SQUARE BETWEEN THE CITY HALL AND THE RIVER, A CIVIC AND COMMERCIAL HUB

Through the modern centuries, this area worked as a civic-commercial axis linking the City Hall with the Ribera del Guadalquivir. That location explains why the Plaza del Potro became a useful point for daily movement between the institutional centre and the river, and why services linked to passing travellers settled here.

In that context, the Potro was a stopping point for merchants and travellers, with activity tied to inns and lodging houses. The area came to house establishments known as the Mesón de la Madera and the Mesón del Potro, and the neighbourhood kept its reputation through the Golden Age for its lively atmosphere, with livestock traders and local tradespeople.

That role as a place of passage and service is easy to read today: what matters isn't just being close to the river, but that the square sits on a natural stretch linking walking routes between the historic centre, the Ribera and the buildings that have shaped its public use.

FROM THE 15TH TO THE 19TH CENTURY: THE HOSPITAL CUTS INTO THE SQUARE AND CHANGES ITS SHAPE

The Plaza del Potro originally had a wider, more regular layout. The decisive change comes at the end of the 15th century, when the Hospital de la Caridad is built: the building rises at the expense of the public space and, on its eastern side, cuts the square down by more than half. From then on, the site stops reading as an open square and takes on a more elongated shape, almost like a widened street.

That cutback shapes how the place reads today: the monumental ensemble is concentrated into a narrower space, with the main buildings and elements aligned and fitted around the central void.

By the 18th century, the square gains a monumental addition with the installation of a Triunfo de San Rafael, a Baroque work by the sculptor Miguel de Verdiguier. This piece wasn't always here: it was moved in at the end of the 19th century, placed at one end to cement the presence of the city's guardian within the ensemble.

THE MONUMENTS THAT ANCHOR A VISIT TO THE POTRO

Once inside, the Plaza del Potro is best understood through the elements spread across the same space. At the centre stands the Fuente del Potro, and at one end rises the Triunfo de San Rafael. Along the sides are the buildings that explain the place's historic use and its role today: the Posada del Potro and the former Hospital de la Caridad, now linked to museums and culture.

FUENTE DEL POTRO: OCTAGONAL BASIN AND THE 1847 RELOCATION

The Fuente del Potro gives the square its name. It's made up of a central fountain with an octagonal basin and, above it, the stone rearing colt bearing the city's emblem. The fountain hasn't always stood in the same spot: in 1847 it was moved to another point within the square itself and repaired, while keeping its original design.

TRIUNFO DE SAN RAFAEL: ADDED IN THE 18TH CENTURY, MOVED IN THE 19TH

At one end stands the Triunfo de San Rafael, a Baroque work from the 18th century by Miguel de Verdiguier. Its presence in the Plaza del Potro was cemented after its move at the end of the 19th century, and it now stands as the vertical landmark visible on entering from the Ribera del Guadalquivir and from the streets that lead into the square.

POSADA DEL POTRO AND THE FORMER HOSPITAL

The Posada del Potro dates back to the 14th century and functioned as an inn and lodging house. Today it houses the Centro Flamenco Fosforito. The other major building in the ensemble is the former Hospital de la Caridad, built at the end of the 15th century by order of the Catholic Monarchs. Today it holds the Museo Provincial de Bellas Artes de Córdoba and the Museo Julio Romero de Torres, both visited as part of the square's immediate cultural surroundings.

CERVANTES IN CORDOBA: HIS LEGACY AT THE POTRO AND ITS TILES

The Plaza del Potro also holds a direct tribute to Miguel de Cervantes. It's seen in plaques and tiles placed in the square itself to record that link with the area, since his family lived nearby, on Calle Grajea.

These pieces were placed in 1917. They are tiled plaques (predominantly blue), made by the potter Manuel Vigil-Escalera Díaz, and installed with the drive and funding of Enrique Romero de Torres together with other cultural patrons.
