On this guided tour of the Alcázar of the Christian Monarchs of Córdoba you explore a monument built on Roman and Visigothic remains, which was the residence of emirs and caliphs in the Islamic period and, after the Christian conquest of 1236, passed to monarchs such as Ferdinand III and Alfonso XI, until it became one of the key settings of the Catholic Monarchs.

During the tour you enter the defensive complex and its main spaces, with stops in areas such as the Women's Courtyard, the Hall of Mosaics with Roman pieces found in the forum, and the terraced gardens with fountains and ponds. Among the towers, the Tower of Homage stands out, linked to Christopher Columbus's stay in Córdoba when he sought support for his voyage to the Indies, and the walk ends in the Alcázar itself, among courtyards and gardens.

Itinerario

FULL ITINERARY OF THE ALCÁZAR OF THE CHRISTIAN MONARCHS TOUR

  1. 1

The itinerary is a complete reading of the Alcázar from the outside in. First you walk along the wall and the defensive system to place the military past of the complex and its phases of use. Along this stretch the main towers are identified, with stops at the Tower of the Lions as the oldest, the Tower of Homage as the highest point with views towards the Guadalquivir river and the reference to Christopher Columbus and the Catholic Monarchs, and the Tower of the Inquisition, linked to the period when the tribunal used it as an archive and for surveillance, although today it cannot be visited.

  2. 2

You enter through the main gate from the Almohad period and, once inside, move on to the Women's Courtyard, a large cobbled courtyard with columns and archaeological remains, associated with the administrative quarters and the period when the building was the city's main prison. From there you go up to the interior area via staircases displaying mosaics, Roman sculptures and old furniture, pieces found in Córdoba and integrated into the route. The highlight of this part is the Hall of Mosaics, with a collection of 2nd- and 3rd-century Roman mosaics from the forum, with scenes such as Eros and Psyche, Polyphemus and Galatea, the face of Medusa and the Tragic Actor, as well as a 3rd-century Roman sarcophagus in Carrara marble with mythological and funerary reliefs.

  3. 3

The tour continues in the terraced gardens, with fountains, ponds and walks that complete the most visual part of the Alcázar. Here stories linked to the Catholic Monarchs are told, the sculpture of the Catholic Monarchs with Christopher Columbus is located and you see large rectangular ponds surrounded by trees, connected to a hydraulic system fed by the Guadalquivir through waterwheels and adapted Roman channels. In the final area there are also more recent gardens, with low fountains and water jets, before the route ends in the Alcázar itself, among courtyards and gardens. Depending on restoration work or occasional events, some areas may be cordoned off.
