This guided tour of the Mosque and Jewish Quarter covers in 3 hours the Mosque-Cathedral of Córdoba and the Jewish Quarter, going into the Orange Tree Courtyard and the inside of the monument.

During the tour the guide explains the context of the city's different eras and how the old mosque became a cathedral in the 13th century after the conquest by Ferdinand III the Saint. The route continues through the streets of the Jewish quarter to the Synagogue and the square of Maimonides, with keys to the life of the medieval Jewish community, the 14th-century pogroms and the Mudejar style of the temple.

Itinerario

FULL ITINERARY OF THE MOSQUE AND JEWISH QUARTER TOUR

  1. 1

The meeting point is the Puerta del Perdón of the Mosque-Cathedral, on Calle Cardenal Herrero, right opposite Sabor a España. The guide waits for you there with visible identification and, from that same entrance, the route starts in the Orange Tree Courtyard for about 15 minutes to explain how the courtyard was used before prayer, the meaning of the ablutions and its direct connection with the prayer hall as part of the whole.

  2. 2

The central part takes place inside the Mosque-Cathedral and takes approximately 90 minutes. The itinerary moves through the areas corresponding to the different phases of the building: the Mosque of Abd al-Rahman I with its original 8th-century columns (many reused from Roman and Visigothic buildings), and the extensions of Abd al-Rahman II, Al-Hakam II and Almanzor, explaining what each stage added and why the monument ended up with such marked architectural complexity. Along the way you reach the Mihrab, the most sacred space, with Byzantine mosaics and inscriptions, and also the Cathedral Transept, where you understand the change of use from the 13th century onwards and the adaptation of the building to Catholic functions.

  3. 3

The second half moves on foot to the Jewish Quarter and devotes around 75 minutes to the Jewish neighbourhood and the Synagogue. The walk through the cobbled streets helps to picture the life of the medieval Jewish community, the enclosed character of the neighbourhood and the episodes of social tension in the 14th century. At the Synagogue of Córdoba, one of the medieval Jewish temples preserved in Spain, the Hebrew inscriptions and the Mudejar style of the building are interpreted. The tour ends in Plaza de Maimónides, in front of his statue, with context on his figure as a physician, philosopher and theologian.

  1. 4

The order may vary due to liturgical events in the Cathedral or conservation work on the monuments.
